Let me tell you what I wish I knew before I packed…
Let me tell you what I wish I knew before I packed…
I went into this trip with a full plan—outfits, shoes, everything. I even mapped out a petite travel capsule ahead of time (I shared exactly what I packed here).
Well… we arrived.
The sun was warm. The humidity was thick, and scattered rain showers came almost every evening—but the days were beautiful.
It took me a few days to fully unwind and relax… and then I realized none of the wardrobe planning mattered quite as much as I thought it would.
You would think, at 55, I would have learned this by now—but I think it’s just my personality. I always want to feel prepared, and I tend to overthink things a bit.
Hopefully, my mistakes will help you.
Beach days are long (and you’ll want them to be), dinners are relaxed, and the food on the island is absolutely incredible. Restaurants around Soufrière have an upscale feel that still feels easy and special.
I had planned my dinner outfits so carefully, and this was the best executed part of my packing plan… yet more than a few pieces never even left my suitcase.
If you’re planning a beach trip, here’s the truth I learned—and next time I will listen to my own advice. These are the St Lucia beach packing tips I wish I had known before I left. First, let me tell you what I packed and what I actually wore.
What I actually packed (and what I used)
Here’s what I brought- with the best intentions and thinking I wasn’t overpacking….I was.
- 3 swimsuits
- 3 dinner dresses
- 1 blue t-shirt dress that doubled as a coverup
- 1 white gauze button-down coverup
- 1 linen long-sleeve coverup (never worn)
- 2 tanks (never worn)
- 2 T-shirts (wore 1)
- 2 pairs of shorts (including jean shorts… also never worn)
- 1 striped t-shirt dress (great for breakfast ✔️)
- 1 sporty skort + t-shirt (worn for our hike ✔️)
- 1 navy sporty tank dress (great for breakfast ✔️)
- 3 pairs of flat sandals
- Tennis shoes (worn on the plane and for our hike ✔️)
So here’s the honest takeaway:
👉 Even when you pack well, you’ll still tend to overpack if you’re unsure what your days will actually look like.
I’ve realized that’s usually where the “just in case” pieces come from—we’re trying to be prepared for every version of the trip.
If I could give one piece of advice, it would be to have a quick conversation with your group beforehand about expectations. Are you planning activities? Exploring? Or leaning into slow beach days?
In our case, it was a new destination for all of us, so we didn’t fully know what to expect. I thought we’d be out exploring more, but we ended up spending every day at the beach—and it was perfect.
And honestly, that realization shaped some of my biggest St Lucia beach packing tips. Unfortunately, it came to fruition after we arrived.
What you’ll actually wear (so you can pack smarter than I did)
1. Swimsuits + coverups will be your real outfits
We went to a different beach every single day—and stayed all day.
And honestly? It was the best part of the trip. And even if we had done more activities, beach attire was pretty much the theme for everything. We even went directly to the beach after our hike so had on swimsuits under our hiking attire.
Each beach had everything you needed—restaurants, drinks, chairs, even beach service at one.
So my “outfit” was almost always:
Swimsuit + something easy to throw over it.
👉 My advice:
Bring more cute, breathable coverups than you think—and fewer “real outfits.”
If you take anything from these St Lucia beach packing tips, let it be this.
2. Bring THREE easy dresses you truly love
I packed three dinner dresses.
I wore them all—and this was probably the most wise packing decision I made. Summer dresses don’t take up much packing space so are easy to fit in. We had nice dinners every night so it was nice to have a good variety of dresses to choose from. If you are planning on more casual dinners, you may not need as many.
👉 My advice:
Bring three dresses that:
- don’t wrinkle- or wrinkles easily fall out with a little steam from the shower
- feel good the second you put them on
- Can be dressed up or down depending on time of day and surroundings
3. Pack at least one “throw-on and go” dress
My blue t-shirt dress ended up being one of my most useful pieces. It could be a dress with sandals or a cover-up and I wore it as both at different times.
We stopped at a beach restaurant that required more than a swimsuit (no service in a swimsuit).
👉 My advice:
Always have one easy dress or outfit you can throw on quickly without thinking.
4. Be careful with fabric (this one surprised me)
I packed a beautiful long-sleeve linen coverup thinking it would feel light and elevated.
It was too warm. I never wore it.
I also packed jean shorts… which felt heavy and completely wrong the second I stepped into the humidity.
👉 My advice:
If it’s not lightweight, breathable, and easy in heat—it’s not coming out of your suitcase.
One of the most practical St Lucia beach packing tips—humidity changes everything. I live in a dry environment and tend to forget this.
5. You don’t need as many “day outfits” as you think
I brought tanks, shorts, outfit combinations…
I didn’t wear them.
👉 My advice:
Skip the extra daytime outfits. You won’t miss them.
6. Your travel outfit should work twice
I wore tennis shoes on the plane (because I hate cold feet), and they ended up being perfect for our hike. I wore the same linen pants on the flight there and the return flight and just changed up my tops.
👉 My advice:
Wear your bulkiest, most practical items on the plane—and make sure they serve more than one purpose.
What I wish I had done differently
If I packed again for this exact trip, I would:
- Bring fewer total pieces
- Skip jean shorts completely
- Skip anything long-sleeved or heavy
- Pack 2–3 great coverups that can double as a cute dress instead of just one
- Stop packing for “what if”
These are the kind of St Lucia beach packing tips you only really learn after being there.
A closer look at the beaches (because this is really what shaped the trip)
One thing I didn’t fully realize before arriving is just how much the beaches would be the trip.
We ended up going to a different beach almost every day—and then repeating our favorites.
Each one had its own personality, its own pace, its own rhythm. And honestly, that’s what made the days feel so relaxed.
Understanding this is one of the most important St Lucia beach packing tips I can share—your days will likely be simpler than you expect.
St. Lucia Beaches in Soufriere
Sugar Beach (we went twice for a reason)
This is the one you picture when you think of St. Lucia.
The Pitons rising up on either side, that soft sand, the water that almost doesn’t look real—it’s stunning in a way that makes you pause for a second or two when you first walk down.
It’s a bit more of a “planned” beach day—you’ll want to get there earlier—and it does feel a little more elevated than some of the others, but it’s absolutely worth it.
There’s a beautiful resort just behind the beach, and while many of the chairs are reserved for guests, if you arrive early enough you can usually snag a great spot in the public section for free—which is exactly what we did.
When you arrive at the drop-off point, be prepared for a fairly steep (and honestly, very pretty) walk down to the beach. The whole way down, I kept thinking… are we really going to have to climb back up this later?
Thankfully, no.
At the bottom, there’s a small shuttle stop, and for about $5 per person they’ll drive you back up the hill—which feels completely worth it. Even better, if you buy a drink at the beach bar and show your receipt, the ride up is free.
And yes… the drinks are pricey, but they’re also really good.
👉 Tips:
- Sit to the left of the dock for a quieter spot
- Arrive before 10:00 am to beat the cruise crowds
Anse Mamin (quiet, calm, and my personal favorite)
This one felt like a little escape—and it was so beautiful.
Tucked away and more peaceful, it had that quiet, exhale energy that makes you lose track of time.
Chair setups are available (not cheap, but worth it), including shaded palapas for two.
Or… just bring a towel and enjoy it for free.
The Jungle Bar here was incredible—famous cheeseburger (yes, it lives up), amazing fish tacos, gazpacho, and the best drinks served in little fluted glasses.
We went twice. That says everything.
👉 If you go:
Bring a coverup, something to read, and plan to slow all the way down.
Anse Chastanet (for the water lovers)
Darker sand, a little more rugged, and absolutely beautiful water.
Great for snorkeling and floating—this is where you stay in the water longer.
Only a 10-minute walk to Anse Mamin, which makes it easy to do both. We just passed through Anse Chastanet and headed to Anse Mamin, which was a bit quieter. Anse Chastint is beautiful though and a haven for snorkelers. There was also an open air restaurant and bar here too.
👉 If you go:
Make it a full beach day and consider pairing both beaches.
Malgretoute Beach (easy, relaxed, and a little under the radar)
Smaller, lesser known, and a little more tucked away.
Not as dramatic—but still beautiful.
What stood out most here was the service.
They escorted us to free chairs, handed us menus, and took care of us all day—bringing food and drinks right to us.
Warm, friendly, and effortless.
There were snorkelers in the water, great food, and a relaxed pace that made it easy to stay longer than planned. I could have stayed at this beach until dark. It was so relaxing and quiet.
👉 If you go:
Just show up, let them take care of you, and enjoy it.
Why this matters for your packing (and your expectations)
Your trip might not be about doing more.
It might be about settling into a rhythm you didn’t expect.
For us, that rhythm was:
Beach → lunch → more beach → dinner
And it was exactly what I needed.
This mindset shift is one of the most valuable St Lucia beach packing tips I can pass along.
Final thoughts (from someone who learned the hard way)
I still love a capsule wardrobe.
And I am still learning.
It’s not about packing perfectly.
It’s about packing for the vacation you will actually be experiencing.
So if you’re heading somewhere warm and beachy:
Simplify.
Choose comfort.
Repeat outfits without guilt.
And trust me—
you will not miss your jean shorts.
If you remember anything from these St Lucia beach packing tips, let it be this: pack for how you want to feel, not just how you want to look.
